Why R-22 Refrigerants Are No Longer Available

Why R-22 Refrigerants Are No Longer Available

Newer Refrigerants Cause Less Damage to the Environment While Still Providing Reliable Cooling

R-22 refrigerant is phasing out because it contains chlorine, which destroys the Earth’s ozone layer. New modern refrigerants, such as R-410A and R-32, do not harm the ozone layer. They are safer for the environment, have lower global warming impacts, and carry a lower risk of toxic home exposure.

R-410A and R-32 are air conditioner coolants. R-410A is a stable, non-flammable blend that historically replaced ozone-depleting gases. R-32 is a newer, single-component gas that offers much higher energy efficiency, lower electricity use, and a significantly smaller carbon footprint.

Benefits of R-410A

  • No Ozone Damage: Has an ozone depletion potential of zero (ODP = 0)
  • Safe and Stable: Classified non-flammable (A1 safety rating), making it very safe during handling and maintenance
  • Established Technology: Widely used for decades, meaning most technicians are fully familiar with servicing it
  • Reliable Cooling: Provides strong and consistent cooling performance in standard residential and commercial setups

Benefits of R-32

  • Lower Environmental Impact: Features a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675, which is about one-third the GWP of R-410A (2,088)
  • Higher Energy Efficiency: Delivers roughly 10% to 12% better energy efficiency, reducing overall power consumption and lowering utility bills
  • Less Coolant Required: Systems need up to 20% less charge volume to achieve the same cooling output.
  • Easier to Recycle: Because it is a single-component fluid rather than a complex chemical blend, it is much simpler to reclaim and reuse.
